Ibadan Agog as Oba Lekan Balogun is installed as 42nd Olubadan…Osinbajo, Atiku, Govs, Royalties grace coronation

Those in Ibadan on Friday, can attest that,it was going to be a clear departure from the usual days in the metropolis. Early enough, the human and vehicular activities towards the Mapo Hall, venue of the coronation of his Imperial Majesty,Oba Dr Olalekan Moshood Ishola Balogun (Alli Okunmade2) Governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde, on Friday installed Senator Olalekan Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan.

Oba Balogun’s coronation, which attracted top dignitaries,as the traditional head of Ibadan, the state capital, came 36 years after he became the Mogaji.

The new monarch was presented with his Staff of Office and Instrument of Office by Governor,Seyi Makinde,at the grand ceremony held at the ancient Mapo Hall in Ibadan.

Present at the coronation included the Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo; a former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and Governors Kayode Fayemi, Dapo Abiodun, Abdullahi Ganduje of Ekiti, Ondo and Kano states.

Monarchs at the event included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi; Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Rasheed Akanbi; the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan; and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao.

Meanwhile, shortly before the presentation of the staff of office, former governor Rashidi Ladoja, who is the Osi Olubadan, led other high chiefs to pay homage to the new monarch. They all took turns to prostrate before the king.

The elated Olubadan expressed gratitude to the governor, the High Chiefs and the people of Ibadan for their support, which he said enabled him to ascend the throne. In his maiden speech thanked dignitaries and the people of Ibadan for their support for him to ascend the throne after 36 years as the Mogaji of Ali Iwo. “I will not let Ibadan down, I will not let Nigeria down,” he noted.

Makinde described the Olubadan succession arrangement as the best while advising traditional rulers not to dabble in politics or allow politicians to tinker with the plan.

He said, “Since the first coronation ceremony was held in the 1850s, we have maintained in the best way possible, given various circumstances, one of the best succession lines in Yoruba history.

“So, we rejoice that today, we crown a new Olubadan. As a Bible Proverb says, when the righteous is in authority, the people rejoice. Our gathering here today is victory for the sons and daughters of Ibadanland, and restoration of our traditional systems.

“I have always taken a stand for the integrity of our traditional system and so I am especially delighted that today, Friday, March 11, 2022, the sanctity of the emergence of this century-old dynasty has been restored.

“His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr) Mohood Olalekan Ishola Balogun Alli, Okumade II, has distinguished himself as an excellent professional. He has without doubt contributed and will continue to contribute to the development of Ibadanland and Oyo State at large.”

“So, we rejoice that His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr) Mohood Olalekan Ishola Balogun Alli, Okumade II, climbed the 22 steps on the Olubadan line starting from the lowest rung of Jagun Olubadan over a period of 39 years.

“We rejoice because His Imperial Majesty having seen how things were, when politics became a factor in the ascension to the throne, is in a great position to defend the traditions of our people and ensure that this does not happen again.”

The new monarch was one of the Baales promoted and crowned as kings in 2017 by former Governor Abiola Ajimobi during a disagreement with the then Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

Ladoja and the late monarch opposed Ajimobi’s move to tinker with the town’s age-long chieftaincy and succession plan, while the other High Chiefs submitted themselves to Ajimobi’s move. This triggered some persons’ initial opposition to Balogun’s nomination as Olubadan, as some argued that having been crowned as a king, he could no longer become the Olubadan.

His nomination as recommended by the Olubadan-in-Council was however approved by the governor, who also approved the revocation of the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration amended by Ajimobi to promote the Baales in 2017.

Makinde said, “I want to restate that even though we politicians will come and go, sometimes, to satisfy our political whims, we may make decisions that do not protect our traditional systems. But this is why the custodians of our culture must always take a stand against us tinkering with age-old traditional systems.

“Our elders, the members of the various councils, the chiefs, our traditional fathers they are the gatekeepers and they must remain steadfast in their role. Remember, no politician can destroy any system without the cooperation of some members of these systems.

“Therefore, I want to use this opportunity to ask that Kabiyesi and the Olubadan-in-Council work to ensure that the laws having to do with the ascension to the throne of Olubadan remain sacrosanct. If there are to be any amendments, they should be self-conceived. The Olubadan-in-Council should remain self-regulated without any external interference from the political class.”

The vice-president congratulated the new monarch, saying Ibadan was lucky to have him as their king. He noted that Balogun’s openness and large heart earned him the throne as he prayed that his reign would bring greatness to the town.

“He was better prepared for the throne, having been a scholar, former senator and champion of indigenous culture and community empowerment,” Osinbajo added.

UK,jails Yoruba Supremacist,Adeyinka Grandson, for four years for instigating violence in Nigeria

A Nigerian based in West London, Adeyinka Shoyemi, 45, of Powis Terrace in Notting Hill, who incite racial hatred with inflammatory messages encouraging violence in Nigeria has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Shoyemi, popularly known as Adeyinka Grandson, of Powis Terrace in Notting Hill, first came to the attention of counter-terror police in the UK in March 2019 after members of the public tipped them off about the posts targeting particular ethnic groups in Nigeria.

UK-based Evening Standard reported on Friday that the messages, posted by accounts under the name ‘Adeyinka Grandson’, were assessed by a specialist group of officers in the Met’s Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit.

They found the posts, which had commentary encouraging attacks against certain ethnic groups, especially the Igbo, were in potential breach of the law and launched a probe. He was first arrested at his home address in August 2019, with officers searching three properties linked to him and seizing various digital devices.

Shoyemi was initially charged with six counts of inciting racial hatred and he was released on bail with a condition not to post any more social media posts which were threatening, abusive or insulting to any ethnic groups.

But he was later rearrested after he flouted his bail conditions to make more of the posts.

Consequently two more inciting racial hatred charges were added.

Shoyemi was sentenced to four-and-a-half years’ behind bars on Thursday.

He was found guilty on November 30 of eight counts of inciting racial hatred after a trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said, “Our Counter-Terrorism Internet Referral Unit – the first of its kind to be established anywhere in the world – was instrumental in identifying Shoyemi and his activity.

“Over the last ten years, the CTIRU has been at the forefront of getting harmful content removed from the internet and detecting and investigating potential terrorist-related activity online.

“We continue to need the help and support of the public and I would encourage anyone who comes across material or posts that could be related to terrorism or violent extremist activity to report it to us, so that our specialist officers can take action where necessary.”

ISWAP claims responsibility for Kuje Prison invasion, frees Kaduna train attack masterminds

Scores of gunmen believed to be terrorists on Tuesday night bombed the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abuja, which was being guarded by dozens of soldiers, Department of State operatives, police officers and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel.

During the attack which began around 10:22 pm, the terrorists released 600 inmates, including 15 deadly Boko Haram commanders who masterminded the March 28 attack on the Kaduna-Abuja train at Katari, Kaduna, in which eight persons were killed and over 68 passengers kidnapped.

The Islamic State West Africa Province claimed responsibility for the attack in a 30-second video which showed the gunmen setting ablaze vehicles parked in the facility.

The spokesman, Nigeria Correctional Service, Umar Abubakar, confirmed that an NSCDC officer, Insp. Illyasu Abraham, three terrorists and four inmates died in the incident.

The Kuje attack came barely hours after a convoy of cars carrying the Advance Team of security guards, protocol and media officers ahead of the President’s trip to Daura for Sallah, came under a terrorist attack

Findings by The PUNCH on Wednesday indicated that the assailants bombed the fence before gaining entry into the facility and also razed seven vehicles, and destroyed other facilities.

The gunmen were said to have operated for about two hours without any response from the security agencies.

The incident sparked panic in Kuje, a satellite town where the correctional facility is located, and apprehension in the nation’s capital.

About 900 inmates are being held at the facility, including a former Commander, Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, who is facing trial for drug dealing.

Also at the facility are the former governors of Plateau and Taraba States, Joshua Dariye, Jolly Nyame and others pardoned by the Council of State in April.

They have not been released due to the delay in their approval letter from the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

If you recall, over 12 attacks and jailbreaks have occurred in the last five years in which no fewer than 3,500 inmates and hardened criminals have escaped.

Top security sources said the attackers, on gaining entrance into the custodial centre, made for a section of the expansive premises where the Boko Haram commanders were held.

Niger prison

They were said to have called out the names of the terrorists who were brought to the correctional centre from a special detention centre for insurgent fighters located in Shiroro, Niger state, a few weeks ago.

A source stated, “The deadly BH commanders were transferred from the detention facility in Shiroro for trial in Abuja. They were among the scores of terrorists arrested by the IRT when Kyari was the commander.

“On breaching the perimeters, the attackers went to a section of the custodial centre where their men were being held and called them out by name. That means they have advanced information about where the guys are. It is a coordinated raid with tacit official support.”

Providing an insight into the prison attack, the source, an operation commander, explained that the abduction of the Kaduna train passengers was carried out by the terrorists to compel the Federal Government to release their commanders.

The PUNCH had reported that Kaduna kidnappers were demanding the release of 15 commanders, a request the government was reluctant to grant.

The official added, “With the escape of the BH fighters, the kidnappers may soon release the Kaduna train passengers because their demand has been met tacitly as their attack on the prison was made very easy.

“How could the attackers have succeeded if not for official compromise? This is a facility being guarded by a combined team of 176 Special Forces, Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army; Police Mobile Squadron 21; DSS, and the armed squad of the Nigeria Correctional Service numbering about 100.

“They also have about four Armoured Personnel Carriers and close circuit tv cameras which covered the perimeter fence. There were also three security checkpoints before the facility.

“Besides these security layers, the Nigeria Air Force base, Nigeria Immigration Service and NSCDC headquarters are just a few kilometres from the prison. If these are not enough to deter or thwart the attack, there is a Police Counter-Terrorism Unit at Zuba and the SFU unit in Gwagwalada. How come all these security structures failed to thwart the assault?”

An impeccable security source observed that the standard security protocol dictates that the vicious commanders should not be kept together in a detention facility.

He added, “Such vicious terrorist commanders are not supposed to be kept together at a facility. They should have been kept in twos in different states to make it hard, if not impossible for their compatriots to rescue all of them at a go.”

An NCoS Officer said the attack was successful because the soldiers were newly deployed to the prison facility.

The officer said, “I think why the attack was successful was because they just brought new military personnel and they are yet to settle down.  Also, our men didn’t quickly get the reinforcement needed to repel them; it was after they left that we started receiving help. “

Emmanuel Jonny, a resident said the buildings in the area were riddled with bullets fired by the terrorists.

Buhari laments intelligence failure as sources allege official complicity

Meanwhile, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday, said he was disappointed by the loopholes in the country’s intelligence system which the terrorists exploited in attacking the prison facility.

According to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari said this when he visited the Medium Security Custodial Centre, en route to the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, from where he flew to Dakar, Senegal, ahead of the International Development Association for Africa Summit holding on Thursday (today).

The statement is titled ‘Buhari visits Kuje, asks questions about intelligence and why prison defences failed to work.’

Speaking to journalists after the assessment, he said, “I am disappointed with the intelligence system. How can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it?”

According to Shehu, the President was briefed about the attack by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Shuaib Belgore and the Controller-General of Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, who  showed him the bombed-out section used to access the facility and the records office which was set on fire, after which the invaders launched an attack on all cells in which Boko Haram terrorists were held.

The President was told that none of the 64 terrorists is unaccounted for, but their records are available.

Buhari, who expressed shock over the scale and audacity of the attack queried: “How did the defences at the prison fail to prevent the attack? How many inmates were in the facility? How many of them can you account for? How many personnel did you have on duty? How many of them were armed? Were there guards on the watchtower? What did they do? Does the CCTV work?”

He was also informed that the security forces have recaptured 350 of the escapees while about 450 others are still unaccounted for, and that rapid work is underway to re-arrest the rest.

The President, accompanied by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, said he is expecting “a comprehensive report” on the incident.

Following the two attacks on the Presidential convoy and the prison, Nigerians condemned Buhari’s decision to proceed with his trip to Dakar.

But speaking to State House Correspondents, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said it was expedient for Buhari to make the trip at such a time.

UK Govt. Partners UBA Foundation, Others, in £20m Drive to Support Girl-Education in Developing Countries

To mark the International Women’s Day this year, on March 8, 2022, Prime Minister Boris Johnson launched a new global partnership with 11 global businesses to improve girls’ access to education and employment in developing countries.

·       The UK Government will contribute an initial £9m, with the partners providing an additional  £11m.

·       The programme aims to provide high quality skills training to around 1 million girls around the world.

·       Improving girls’ access to education is a key part of the UK’s foreign policy, to ensure the  build back  from the pandemic and prevent a lost generation. Investing in education helps lift communities out of poverty and protects girls from early marriage, forced labour and gender-based violence.

London, United Kingdom; 8 March, 2021: As part of activities to mark this year’s edition of the International Women’s Day (IWD), the United Kingdom Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has launched a new global partnership with UBA Foundation and 10 other organisations, to improve girls’ access to education and employment in developing countries.

To this end, the UBA Foundation, together with 10 other global businesses have come together with the UK government who will be working in partnership with UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited (GenU) to fund this very crucial programme that aims to provide high quality skills training to around one million girls around the world.

The UBA Foundation, other private sector players and global businesses who are partnering to fund and resource the the initiative to tune of £11m are Accenture, Standard Chartered, Unilever, Microsoft, Pearson, PwC, Coursera, Vodafone, BP and Cognizant. The UK government has contributed an initial £9m to the initiative called the Girls’ Education Skills Partnership programme.

Explaining its drive to undertake this project which is expected to have far-reaching positive effects for the girl-child across the world, the UK Government pointed out that even before the Covid pandemic, millions of children did not have any access to school - and girls from disadvantaged families are particularly vulnerable to missing out on education, whether through poverty or prejudice. The pandemic has created even more barriers to education, with a peak of 1.6 billion children around the world having faced school closures.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who pointed out that this is UK’s first education partnership of its kind where the UK Government is joining forces with the private sector to boost girls’ access to education in developing countries, said, “The United Kingdom has long been a proud and mighty champion of this fundamental cause and today we take one leap further through our first Global Partnership of its kind - opening up opportunities for one million girls across the developing world to have access to high quality skills training.

Continuing, Boris said, “Ensuring every girl and young woman across the globe receives 12 years of quality education is the greatest tool in our armoury to end the world’s great injustices. “Delivering on this mission will be one of the best defences against ignorance, ensure the greatest protection from prejudice and put a rocket booster behind our hopes and dreams for global development in the years to come.”

In his speech, Mr Johnson noted that some of the businesses involved will be contributing a range of resources including books, computers and other technology, mentoring, advice and access to their networks, skills and training programmes just as the private sector involvement will help ensure that education and learning opportunities provide girls with the skills for the future that employers need.

The Group Chairman, United Bank for Africa(UBA), Mr Tony O. Elumelu, CON, who was in attendance at the event reiterated the importance of educating the girl child and giving back always as we strive towards sustainable development.  “We understand first hand, the need to empower young women in African communities to catalyse sustainable socio economic development. At the UBA Group, we are committed to women empowerment and we continue to champion women causes in our business and through our work in philanthropy. Working together, we must ensure that our girls are properly educated and attain the necessary skills that allow them to effectively compete as the world becomes increasingly global,” He added.

Mr Elumelu thanked the Prime Minister and the UK Special Envoy, Helen Grant, for the laudable initiative that will see more girls globally, being educated.
