FG denies subsidy return, more fuel stations shut

The Federal Government, on Monday, denied reintroducing the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, amid the closure of many filling stations nationwide due to various challenges in the downstream oil sector.

It also said the pockets of queues observed by motorists in petrol stations across the country stemmed from hiccups in product distribution from the South to the North, not a lack of supply.

This came as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited also declared on Monday that it would have gone bankrupt in June this year had it been the President, Bola Tinubu, did not halt subsidy on PMS in May.

NNPCL also announced that Nigeria would become a net exporter of refined petroleum products by next year, going by efforts to revamp its refineries.

Nigeria, through the  NNPCL, currently imports PMS and other refined petroleum products consumed across the country, which has been ongoing for decades.

The Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, told State House Correspondents after an audience with the President at the Aso Rock Villa that fuel subsidy had not been returned.

“No subsidy whatsoever. We are recovering our full cost from the products that we import. We sell to the market, and we understand why the marketers are unable to import. We hope that they do it very quickly and these are some of the interventions the government is doing. There is no subsidy,” he stated.

Kyari’s assertion came barely 48 hours after the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria confirmed the return of fuel subsidy.

Also, oil marketers had repeatedly stated that fuel subsidy had returned, as they explained that the landing cost of petrol as of last week was N720/litre. The commodity is currently sold at between N580/litre and N617/litre, depending on the area of purchase.

PENGASSAN’s National President, Festus Osifo, had said the government still subsidised petrol due to the cost of crude oil in the international market and the exchange rate.

“They [government] are paying subsidy today. In reality, today, there is subsidy because, as of when the earlier price was determined, the price of crude in the international market was around $80 for a barrel.

“But today, it has moved to about $93/94 per barrel for Brent crude. So, because it has moved, the price [of petroleum] also needed to move. The only reason the price will not move is when you can manage your exchange rate effectively and you can pump in supply and bring down the exchange rate.

“So, if the exchange rate comes down today, we will not be paying subsidy. But with the exchange rate value and the price of crude oil in the international market, we have introduced subsidy,” Osifo had explained.

In his inaugural address after taking the oath of office on May 29, 2023, Tinubu announced that the Federal Government was closing the curtains over the subsidy era.

“Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources.

“We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, health care, and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions. Petrol subsidy is gone!” Tinubu had declared.

The President’s announcement sparked the increase in fuel price from N197 to between N480 and N570. The pump price was subsequently reviewed upward to N617/litre.

Addressing journalists about the gradual return of fuel queues, on Monday, the NNPCL boss said, “We have seen in a very few states pockets of very low queues not unconnected with the road situation.

“We’re seeing the number of blockades on our road crossing products from the Southern depots into the Northern part of the country and it takes them much longer than they do now.

“They have to reroute the trucks around many locations for them to be able to reach, creating delays and some supply gaps. But that has been filled and we do not see such problems again.”

While arguing that supply remained robust, Kyari explained that the full deregulation of the downstream sector had created market competition.

He said this phenomenon had led to minuscule price variations across gas stations, with consumers naturally patronising marketers with a lesser pump price.

“You must have noticed some fuel stations will reduce prices by two Naira and three Naira, so customers will naturally run to the places where you have that price reduction.

“That creates panic because those who don’t know why they are doing it will think something wrong is happening.

“Supply is robust. We have over 1.4 billion litres of product, both marine and land. Also, there are no issues around delivering those products onto the land. So, there is no fear, nothing to bother about,” Kyari argued.

The NNPC chief revealed that the firm was liaising with other oil marketers to address the forex challenges.

He clarified, “We’re engaging them to resolve alongside other agencies of government and critical issues around access to foreign exchange.

“Government is doing so much to ensure supply of FX into the market. We know this FX market will stabilise the current I&E window at around 770.

Ijebu Agog as Awujale installs Sonny Kuku as Ogbeni Oja

There was excitement and jubilations in the air on Saturday, February 3, 2024, as the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, installed a physician and co-founder of the prestigious EKO Hospital, Olor’ogun (Dr) Sonny Folorunsho Kuku as the 4th Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland.

The ceremony coincided with Kuku’s 80th birthday.

The endocrinologist and Pro-Chancellor, University of Benin, succeeded his late uncle and lawyer, Chief Bayo Kuku, the third Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, who died in 2015.

The Ojude Pavilion venue of the event was filled to the brim as family members, friends and associates of the new Ogbeni Oja turned up in their numbers to celebrate with him.

Speaking at the programme, the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, stated that Kuku’s sterling accomplishments in medicine and business, as well as his love and commitment to the development of Ijebuland, was more than enough to qualify him for the prestigious post.

Abiodun said, “Your accomplishments in the medical world, as well as your philanthropic gestures are indicative of the positive impact you are capable of bringing to Ijebuland, and Ogun State in general. That is why we urge you to use your new office for the benefit of all.”

Meanwhile, Oba Adetona stated that Kuku’s selection was purely based on merit, as well as his loyalty to the throne of Awujale.

He said, “Let no one think that that the choice of Olor’ogun was influenced by anyone. I did not pick him as the new Ogbeni Oja for any reason other than for being worthy of this highly coveted seat.

“He has proven to be so loyal to the Awujale throne and demonstrated capability for leadership. I urge him to continue in that trajectory, and keep using his networks worldwide for the socio-economic development of Ijebuland and Ogun State as a whole.”

The Awujale also urged governors in the southwest to emulate Abiodun, who had assented to the law which allows traditional rulers to be installed and buried according to their religious beliefs.

He added, “I have been championing for this shift for some years now, so that we won’t be discouraging people who have good intentions to serve the people to be running away from obaship. It is something we need to do that will add value to royal institutions.”

While speaking at the event, the elated Ogbeni Oja, stated that he was highly honoured to be so chosen by the Awujale for the exalted office, saying that he was ready to redouble his commitment towards further development of Ijebuland.

He said, “I am highly elated with this honour, and I am grateful to Awujale for considering me for this highly exalted office of Ogbeni Oja. I received the honour with great sense of humility, and it is really a call to serve.

“By God’s grace, I will do my best to seek for further growth and development of Ijebuland and Ogun State as a whole.”

Ibadan Explosion! Residents blame Marlian illegal miners....As Oyo,FG begin probe

Residents of Adeyi Avenue in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, have blamed Malian illegal miners for the explosion that rocked the ancient city on Tuesday night.

The explosion left at least three persons dead, scores of others injured, and property worth billions of naira destroyed.

This is just as President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, called on the relevant government agencies to “fish out” and “punish” those responsible for what he called “reckless behaviour” that triggered a devastating blast in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital Tuesday night.

This was as he expressed sadness over the incident he described as “worrisome.”

At least three persons were confirmed dead and over 80 were injured in the explosion which also destroyed several buildings, vehicles, and other property.

A resident of Adeyi Avenue, who simply identified himself as Apa, in an interview with journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday, said there were no illegal mining sites in the area.

He, however, blamed illegal miners from the West African country, Mali, who lived in the area for the explosion, adding that the Federal Government should send illegal miners out of the country.

Apa said his neighbour agreed with him that the explosion was caused by explosive materials, which the Malians used for illegal mining.

Recounting his experience, he said, “When I called my neighbour, she said, ‘You remember those Malians?’ There must be equipment they’re using for doing their mining work that must have exploded, and that equipment is not a cheap material. It’s something that’s very heavy.

“If the explosion had happened in Odogbo barracks, then one would say yes, they have all sorts of things there. That thing is not supposed to be kept in this type of environment. And wherever such equipment is kept, it must be under-regulated humidity. Maybe the temperature would have triggered it, and that’s my own suspicion.

“There is nothing like illegal mining here. It’s miners that live here that brought the equipment and they are Malians.

“This is a lesson for the Nigerian government to decide whether we still want to keep such people in our country. Malians do a lot of things apart from this; they cause a lot of havoc. The government should start thinking about what to do with them, and if you find out they don’t have documents to live in this country, you know what to do.”

Speaking to journalists on the explosion, another Bodija resident, Taiwo Salami, said, “Many have died. We saw corpses all over the street last night (Tuesday). It just has to stop. Not only in Ibadan, in Niger, in Sokoto, in Abuja, everywhere.

“There is chaos and disorder in this country. This is not the country everybody wants to live in. This is not the country of our dreams. It’s just ridiculous. Where do people start from? Lives have been lost. Can they be gained back? They cannot! Everybody woke up yesterday, thinking this is 2024.

“This is January for goodness sake. Is this how we are going to start the year? How many more of such do we have in other neighbourhood that we are not even sure of? I’m tired.”

On the scale of damage, he said, “Everything is gone, everything. The whole house is gone. All the vehicles, all the properties, everything is gone. In fact, this whole area, all the houses would have to be demolished. Every single house must be demolished because their structural defects are evident; there are cracks everywhere. Everything has to be demolished and probably rebuilt. You’re talking about billions here.”

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who visited the scene of the explosion, confirmed the casualties adding that the explosion occurred at Adeyi Avenue, Bodija. However, settlers say the blast was heard and felt kilometers away in many parts of the city.

Makinde said preliminary investigations by security agencies revealed that the blast was triggered by illegal miners occupying one of the houses in the Bodija area of the ancient city.

Makinde further revealed that the investigation revealed foreign names in the Corporate Affairs Commission documents of the company involved in the Ibadan blast.

The governor, while appearing on Channels TV Politics Today, Wednesday promised to uncover the identity of all those involved in the blast.

He explained that the explosion revealed the failure of the neighborhood association, adding that they failed to report the activities of illegal miners in the area to law enforcement agencies.

“Yes, we are trying to uncover the identity of the people involved. We have done a few fact-finding on the company involved. And yes, there are indeed some foreign names in the CAC documents of the company involved, but these are still very early days. We don’t have any reason to cover anything.

“It is a failure of the neighborhood association because we always admonish our people. If you see something that doesn’t look right, then bring it to the attention of the authorities and then they will do something about it. So, people within this neighborhood are aware of some of these things. But it was never brought to the attention of the authorities.

To prevent an occurrence, Makinde said he would seek approval from President Bola Tinubu to compel miners with explosives to store them with the military.

His words, “ I will be seeking approval from the President for us in Oyo State to ensure that any mining activity, anybody that has to deal with explosives, take it to storage with the military. And if they need to use it, they go there, collect it and the military will escort them to where they will use it.

“Once I have the nod of Mr President, I should be signing an executive order that will make it mandatory for anybody dealing with explosives in Oyo state to have it stored with the military.

Makinde further noted that 60 out of the 77 injured persons have been successfully treated and discharged.

Tinubu in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said, “It is worrisome that the cause of the blast is being attributed to the activities of illegal miners.

“Those behind the inexcusable and reckless behaviour that has created the conditions for the sad incident to occur must be fished out and punished.”

The statement is titled ‘President Tinubu commiserates with Oyo State government, victims over the Ibadan explosion.’

President Tinubu commiserated with the government and people of Oyo State and called on all concerned agencies of government to unravel the circumstances that led to the tragedy with alacrity.

He directed the National Emergency Management Agency to work with the Oyo State Government to offer immediate and comprehensive relief to the victims.

Meanwhile, following the devastating explosion, the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday said it had set up a committee to review the laws guiding the control of explosives in the country.

The committee would determine whether laws were violated by the illegal miners identified in the preliminary investigations by security agencies, the Minister of Defense, Mohammed Abubakar, told State House Correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

The council presided over by President Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, expressed worries about the incident, noting the need to avert future episodes.

Abubakar said despite preliminary investigations linking the incident to explosives stored by illegal miners; the authorities are not ruling out gas as a possible cause. However, federal agents are on the ground to ascertain the proximate and remote causes of the incident.

Fielding questions from journalists, the Minister said, “The first question has to do with the Ibadan explosion where the governor said that preliminary investigation suggested that there were some explosives around the area where it happened that are owned by some illegal miners.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has deployed Explosives Ordinance Disposal experts to affected areas following the explosion in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The Force Public Relations, Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi revealed the development in an exclusive interview with our correspondent on Wednesday night.

The FPRO noted that the experts were deployed by the Oyo State Police Command while adding that the Force Headquarters could also deploy more experts to the area if the need arises.

He further noted that the Force Headquarters was expecting a detailed report from the experts.

Adejobi said, “We have EOD experts in Ibadan working very hard at the moment. They have assessed the scene, and we are expecting a detailed report from them on the Ibadan explosion. Those in Ibadan are competent, and we may not need to send additional men to assist, but if they request, the IGP would deploy them.”

Also, the National Emergency Management Authority said no fewer than 58 houses were affected by Tuesday’s explosion at Dejo Oyelese Street, Adeyi Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital city.

The Director General of the agency, Mustapha Ahmed, made the disclosure when he paid a visit to the scene of the explosion to assess the situation.

The Oyo State Government has set up an emergency situation hub to collate and coordinate management of victims affected by the explosion that rocked Ibadan on Tuesday night.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Wednesday, said anyone who was affected could go to the premises of the Housing Corporation, Bodija, Ibadan the Oyo State capital.

The Commissioner who said that the situation hub was headed by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, also advised victims to submit verifiable evidence of their losses and to seek clarifications on the nature of government intervention.

The statement also disclosed that temporary accommodation had been arranged by the government for those displaced as a result of the explosion, adding that the state government would also finance the hospital bills of those injured.

Oyelade confirmed that several victims had started registering at the hub, even as he said that they were being put through by emergency and disaster experts.

As investigations by the security agency into the explosion continued, the state government is narrowing down on the possible cause of the blast.

The commissioner said that because of new evidence, the government was interrogating certain leads that suggested the storage of explosives by illegal miners residing in the area.

During his visit to the scene last night, Governor Seyi Makinde implored residents of Oyo State to be more sensitive to the goings-on in their environment.

“If you see something, say something,” the Makinde emphasized.

The commissioner said that residents could call the situation room on 615.

A senior Advocate of Nigeria, Niyi Akintola’s hotel was one of the properties destroyed in the unfortunate blast that occurred in Ibadan on Tuesday night.

He wrote of the tragedy thus, “This is what remains of my modest contributions to hospitality businesses in Ibadan land just after the explosions of last night (Tuesday) in Bodija. It is a posh hotel in a posh area known as ‘House 40” on Dejo Oyelese Street. Bodiam. I recalled that some of our colleagues who had at one time enjoyed the hospitality of the modest 24 beds which include eight suites, three chalets, and 13 standard rooms are Alariwo, Wole Iyamu SAN, Iyiola Oladokun (whose residence) that shared a fence with my house 40 was completely destroyed. Other members of the Bar whose properties were destroyed on the street include the Late Bola Ige , the Late Bandele Aiku , and a hospitality building said to belong to the late Governor of Ondo state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

“My three other houses on Alabiamo Street, Adeyi Street, and Adenuga Street were also slightly damaged with removed roof, removed POP ceilings, sliding doors, air-conditionals, and several electrical applications. Oh my God, it is terrible! As I write this with my hands trembling, some guests and three hotel staff members are in the hospital but we thank God that no casualty was recorded. What a way to start a new year! I need your prayers please.”

Not satisfied with the process, one of the contestants, Kabir Laoye dragged Ghandi Olaoye to court, saying he was not eligible to be the next Soun.

Olaoye, who challenged Ghandi’s appointment, explained that there was a flaw in the process by which he was appointed.

In his judgment, Justice K.A. Adedokun, who over the matter, ruled that the appointment of Oba Laoye was illegal.

He also ordered the judges to start the right process to elect a new Soun.

Earlier, Justice Adedokun dismissed three petitions brought before him by one Adeyemi Laoye.
The petitioners are also challenging the appointment of the new Soun.

Pharmacists take drug abuse campaign to schools in Ogun

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Ogun Chapter has disclosed plans to educate secondary school students on the dangers of drug abuse in the state.

In a statement on Monday in Abeokuta, the Chairman of PSN, Adewale Adenugba said it was part of the association’s activities marking the 2023 World Pharmacist Day.

He added that the association would reach out to the Nigeria Correctional Service, and orphanage homes, and also give out medications to some communities lacking basic amenities.

According to him, this year’s celebration with the theme: “Pharmacy, Strengthening Health Systems’’ is apt as practitioners need to recognise their roles in improving global health.

“In recognition of the crucial roles pharmacists play in healthcare administration and promotion, for the 2023 celebration we intend to carry out medical outreaches to key communities in the state.

“The association will carry out basic necessary investigations, health education and donation of medications in those communities.

“We would also be visiting the Nigeria Correctional Service and orphanages within the state to show our empathy and support.

“Some of our secondary schools will also be visited for health talk on drug abuse and addiction and of course engagement with the media for continuous education of the populace,” Adenugba said.

According to him, the purpose of celebrating the day is to acknowledge the efforts of pharmacists while also demanding better working conditions and appropriate recognition for the profession.

Adenugba contended that pharmacists remained the most accessible healthcare professionals in most communities, presenting available and affordable healthcare solutions to the populace and improving health standards across the country.

He, however, urged that, as experts on medicine, pharmacists should be allowed to prescribe and initiate medications.

The chairman stressed the need for Nigeria to move towards this direction as it had been proven in more advanced nations “if we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal SDG-3 of the United Nations on Access to Essential Health Services”.

Adenugba said: “In most communities, community pharmacy practice is a life-saving stronghold.

“This sector of the profession strengthens healthcare through providing advice, information and education, triage, screening/testing and referral, administering vaccinations, prescription review, reducing polymerization and medication follow-up to residents.

“However, there is still a wide range of other needs that can be met by community pharmacists in Nigeria, which would relieve pressure on and save time for other areas of the health system.

“Pharmacists also have the skills to take on the management of patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and HIV and many community pharmacists have shown tremendous success in this regard.”
