The Federal Government has declared Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18, 2024, public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival.

In a statement on Friday signed by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Aishetu Ndayako, quoted the minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as congratulating all Muslim Ummah both at home and in the Diaspora on the occasion.

Tunji-Ojo called on the Muslim Ummah to continue to imbibe the spirit of peace, kindness and sacrifice, as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon Him) and to also use the period to pray for unity, prosperity and the stability of the country.

The statement added, “The minister reiterated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration was committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians.

“While wishing the Muslim Ummah a happy Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Minister advised all Nigerians to take responsibility in the resolve to hand over a prosperous Nigeria to the nation’s children.”

Tomato price hike, scarcity caused by Ebola – Agriculture minister

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has disclosed that the rise in the price of tomatoes is a result of an infestation known as Tomato Ebola, which reduced its availability.

Kyari stated this in a post on X.com on Monday while responding to a user who asked that something be done as “the cost of tomatoes is out of control; it’s like they are charging us per seed.”

In his post, the minister wrote, “A significant number of our tomato farms have been affected by a severe infestation known as Tomato Ebola or Tomato Leaf Miner. This has drastically reduced the availability of tomatoes and contributed to rising costs.”

Kyari added that the ministry has outlined plans to combat the issue, which include deploying agricultural experts to affected areas to control and eliminate the infestation and supporting farmers with resources and guidance to recover their crops quickly.

“We understand the impact this has on your daily lives and are working tirelessly to resolve the situation and restore the supply of affordable tomatoes. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging time, he added.”

It is no more news, that,in May, the prices of basic food commodities such as rice, beans, maize, plantains, and tomatoes surged by 25.34 per cent to 40.01 percent as of March 2024.

Labour to begin indefinite strike on Monday over minimum wage, electricity hike

Members of the organised labour, on Friday, declared a nationwide indefinite strike over the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, disclosed this at a press conference in the Labour House, Abuja.

Ajaero said the strike would begin by midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

The NLC leader who read from a jointly prepared speech alongside his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Festus Osifo expressed what it described as, “grave concern and disappointment” over the Federal Government’s failure to conclude and pass into Law a new National Minimum Wage Act and reverse the hike in electricity tariff to N65/kWh.

Ajaero noted that the Friday meeting between the government and Labour further demonstrated the unseriousness and apparent contempt with which the Nigerian state holds the demands of Nigerian workers and people.

“No Governor was present and Ministers absent except the Minister of State for Labour and Employment who doubles as a conciliator. There was none present on the side of the government with the appropriate authority to commit them to any outcome; in essence, the Government abandoned the meeting. We consider this disdainful and shows a lack of commitment to a successful National Minimum Wage negotiation exercise.”

Ajaero noted that during the last May Day celebration on the 1st of May 2024, organised Labour issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the conclusion of the minimum wage negotiation exercise by the end of the month.

“However, there has been no significant progress or commitment from the government towards meeting this demand.

“We also demanded a reversal of the last hike in electricity tariff to N225/kwh back to N65/kWh and stoppage of the apartheid categorization of consumers into Bands. We carried out a nationwide one-day protest on the 13th day of May 2024 giving the government until the last day of this month to take action but the government has not entirely shown any positive response despite the national outrage at this insensitive hike.

Nigerian workers, who are the backbone of our nation’s economy, deserve fair and decent wages that reflect the current economic realities,” Ajaero said.

He further said it was disheartening that despite the repeated calls and the clear ultimatum issued, the government continues to neglect its responsibility to the workforce.

Ajaero also said the government, rather than engage in a dialogue persistently raised its attack dogs to seek to denigrate and intimidate trade union leaders.

“It continued to remain our belief that the people ought to be the only reason for governance and nothing else. The government must, therefore, seek the welfare of the people at all times and refusal to put the people first compels all patriots to take the right step in assisting the government govern well.

“The hike in electricity tariff impoverished further the already suffering people and denies them the right to decent living. Instead of taking remedial action or engaging in a meaningful dialogue, Nigerians were visited with a barrage of the usual propaganda,” he stated.

On the next step, Ajaero said, “In light of this persistent inaction, we, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress hereby issue a notice of commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike to the Federal Government.

“We reiterate that since the National Minimum Wage negotiation exercise has not been concluded and the agreed wage passed into law; the hike in electricity tariff not reversed and categorization of consumers into Bands not stopped as demanded; Nigerian workers are compelled by these failures to embark on an indefinite nationwide industrial action beginning on Monday, the 3rd of June, 2024 to press home our demands.

“The NLC and TUC are united in this cause, and we call on all our affiliates and state Councils, Civil Society Organizations, market men and women and the general populace to prepare for a decisive action. We cannot and will not accept any further delays or excuses. The welfare of Nigerian workers and people is non-negotiable, and we are ready to take all necessary steps to ensure that their rights are protected and their voices heard.”

Earlier on Friday, talks on minimum wage between the Federal Government and organised labour hit a brick wall when the government failed to shift grounds on the N60,000 it proposed during the last meeting.

Recall that the NLC and TUC had given a May 31, 2024 ultimatum on the new minimum wage.

On Tuesday, talks between the Federal Government and organised labour broke down after the government and organised private sector raised their offers to N60,000.

The government added N3,000 to its initial offer of N57,000 proposed last week, taking the total figure to N60,000.

Lamido Sanusi reinstated as Emir of Kano, 4years after being deposed by former Gov. Ganduje

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf on Friday reappointed Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Sanusi received his letter of reinstatement at the Government House in Kano.

The governor said, “By the powers conferred on me by the Kano Emirate Council Law of 1984 and 2024, and supported by the recommendation of the kingmakers, I have the singular pleasure of confirming the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and the head of the Kano Emirate Council.”

Yusuf noted that Sanusi’s reappointment was “based on his competence, credibility and popularity,” urging the new Kano Emir “to be guided by the principles of Islamic teachings and to use his position to unite the emirate, fostering harmony among the Islamic sects in the state.”

If you recall, the 16th Emir of Kano, Sanusi II, had initially ruled as the 14th Emir.

The beginning of Sanusi’s travail dates back to 2020 when he had a fallout with the former state governor and present National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The Kano House of Assembly would later pass a bill to split the Kano Emirate Council, majorly under Sanusi’s control, into five emirates, thereby lowering his influence.

Afterwards, Sanusi was sacked and replaced by the recently deposed 15th Emir – Aminu Ado Bayero.

President Tinubu honours Awujale with GCON on 90th Birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the second highest national honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON) on the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Land,Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetoan on his 90th birthday celebration.

The President, who was represented by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, made the announcement during the commissioning of the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance Studies and the presentation of a book titled “Reinventing Governance in Nigeria: The Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Model” held at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

Tinubu said the royal father, who also celebrated his 66th year on the throne, deserved the honour, based on his contribution to nation-building and meritorious service to humanity.

Tinubu noted that the numerous contributions of Oba Adetona to national development, particularly in the education sector, have expanded the sector to optimal delivery through various donations and endowments.

He described the monarch as forthright with exceptional character who stood his ground and confronted injustice in all its ramifications, commending him for his role in ensuring the return of democratic governance in Nigeria.

President Tinubu averred that Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies would be taken over and managed by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos.

“Because Kabiyesi Adetona has honoured our country and humanity with his many years of meritorious service, I, therefore, on this occasion of his 90th birthday ceremony, confer on him the second highest national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON).

“The National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, will be asked to take over the running and management of Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies,” the president said.

In his remarks, the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, described Oba Adetona as a living legend and a phenomenon whose reign has been a monumental success and a source of pride for the entire Ijebuland and the state at large.

According to the governor, the monarch represents the beauty and candour of the ancestral heritage of the Ijebu people, emphasising that his passion for governance and accessible commitment to education led him to institute the Oba Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance in the Department of Political Science of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye.

“This initiative has led to and given birth to the establishment of the world-class Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance, the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.“He championed the Ijebu Development Board on poverty eradication that has become a model in the entire country,” Abiodun submitted.

Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Toyin Ashiru, said the establishment of the School of Governance is aimed at fostering dialogue among scholars, policymakers, and practitioners on matters of governance, leadership, and public service, adding that it would serve as a hub for research, knowledge sharing, and capacity building to equip people with the skills needed for effective governance.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, said the Awujale has contributed to the development of the school through the donation of offices, lecture and seminar rooms, information and communication technology (ICT), and a library, assuring that the vision and mission of the school of Governance Studies would be vigorously pursued to make it a centre of excellence in good government and leadership in Nigeria and in sub-Saharan Africa.

In a lecture titled “Changing Nigeria’s Governance Narrative,” the occupant of the Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Prof. Akinsola Agagu, said Nigeria, since independence, has been grappling with democratic crises, corruption, mismanagement, ineptitude, and insecurity, among others, saying this has led to the non-achievement of the dividends of independence in the country.

He attributed the deep root of the general governance and development crises in the country to the absence of a seamless intersection of democratic politics with democratic political and legal culture, emphasising that the continued political crisis is due to a flawed political culture that has reduced politics to a lawless and amoral vocation.

Prof. Agagu noted that to change the narrative and put the country on the right track, public-spirited individuals in all facets of life are urgently needed, while patriotism, concern for the people, vision, honesty, transparency, and accountability, as well as impeccable character as exemplified by Oba Sikiru Adetona, should be the hallmarks of those in positions of leadership.

Responding, Oba Adetona appreciated the people for their support and for honouring him with their presence, and he prayed for peace in the families, state, and country.

The event had in attendance former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his wife, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Former Governors of Ogun State; Chief Olusegun Osoba, Sen Gbenga Daniel as well as Sen Ibikunle Amosun.

Emirate Tussle! Chief Justice Ariwoola summons Kano Judges over conflicting orders

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has summoned the Chief Judges of the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court in response to the recent legal turmoil surrounding the Kano Emirate.

This summons follows the issuance of conflicting interim injunctions by the two courts, which have created significant uncertainty and tension within the state.

The conflicting rulings have intensified the ongoing legal and political disputes over the Kano Emirate, prompting the CJN to intervene to restore order and coherence.

At the heart of the disputes is the status and authority within the Kano Emirate, leading to divergent court orders that have further complicated the situation. In his summons on Wednesday, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the importance of “judicial coordination and the necessity for the judiciary to present a unified front, particularly in cases of substantial public interest.

“The upcoming meeting with the chief judges aims to clarify jurisdictional boundaries and prevent future occurrences of conflicting judicial orders.

“The situation in Kano has garnered national attention, with many stakeholders calling for a swift resolution following the state government’s decision to sack Emir Ado Bayero and reinstate Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.”

Since the tussle began, there has been heavy presence of security personnel, including policemen, soldiers, and officials of the Department of State Services, among others, at the Gidan Sarki Nasarawa, which is home to the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, so also, at the residence of the current Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II; the Kano State Government House and some strategic places within the metropolis as part of efforts to beef up security,in the emirate.

Following a new law repealing four emirates earlier created by a former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano installed Sanusi as the 16th Emir of the state.

Kano Assembly reinstate Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II,has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano. This decision followed the Kano State House of Assembly’s resolution to dethrone the current Emir and also dismantle the four new Emirates in the State established under a controversial 2019 law.

Though it has not been officially announced,it is on good authority that Sanusi II has been reinstated, and is expected in Kano on Friday.

According to credible inside sources, “So certainly with the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, the thing to is wait for the Governor to assent to it.”

The then restructuring of the Kano Emirate is seen as a political manoeuvre to diminish the influence of then Emir Sanusi II, a vocal critic of the former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje administration. The creation of the new emirates fragmented the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council, diluting its power and influence.

Meanwhile, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, who sponsored the Amendment Bill, shortly after Thursday’s session, revealed to journalists that, “the bill has been sent to the governor for assent, now there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates; Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye. The law now provides the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.”

Earlier, the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Butu, explained that repealing the law would revive the lost glory of Kano as the division of Kano emirate to five reduced the capacity and dignity of the state at national level. The Majority Leader, Alhaji Lawan Dala, said that the emirate council served as a custodian of culture which was distorted by the creation of the four additional emirates.

With the amendment of the law, all four new emirate councils were abolished leaving only the Kano Emirate.

The House also adopted a motion to create a new second-class emirate council in the state. If you recall,in May,the House initiated steps to amend the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law.

The move paved the way for the return of the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had split the Kano emirate into five and dethroned the then Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Following the victory of the New Nigerian Peoples Party in last year’s election, Kwankwaso had said the government of Abba Kabir Yusuf would review the dethronement and balkanisation of the emirate.

Meanwhile, some operatives of the Department of State Services were seen at the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, on Thursday, amid growing rumours of the Bayero's imminent deposition and  the return of Sanusi Lamido.

Nigerians reject electricity tariff cut, demand total reversal

Nigerians has generally rejected  the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s reduction of the tariff payable by Band A customers from N225/kWh to N206.8/kWh.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, electricity consumers and civil society organisations, in separate moves, demanded a reversal of the hike to the subsidy era tariff.

The new tariff announced on Monday came 33 days after the NERC raised the electricity tariff for Band A customers from N68/kWh to N225/kWh, representing about a 240 per cent increase.

Subsidy on electricity was withdrawn completely from the tariff of consumers in the Band A category, which constitutes about 15 per cent of the total 12.82 million power consumers across the country.

Based on the tariff hike, the Federal Government said it would save N1.5tn.

The government stated that the decision took effect from April 3, 2024, adding that Band A customers would enjoy up to 20 hours of power supply daily.

However, the House of Representatives, organised labour and the Nigerian Bar Association kicked against the hike in tariff payable by about 1.9 million consumers.

The House of Representatives called on the NERC to suspend forthwith the implementation of the new electricity tariff nationwide, while organised labour issued a two-week ultimatum demanding the reversal of the tariff hike.

Still, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu defended the increase during an investigative hearing held by the Senate Committee on Power last week, insisting that there would be a nationwide blackout in the next three months if the increase in electricity tariff was not implemented.

However, NERC in a statement announcing the eight per cent reduction for band A customers said this was a result of changes in macroeconomic indices in April, especially the appreciation of the naira against the dollar in the foreign exchange market.

The commission noted that the decision came after a thorough review of the macroeconomic parameters and exchange rate appreciations.

In response to the NERC’s order, the Abuja, Ikeja, and Ibadan electricity distribution companies among others, announced a reduction in their tariffs, accordingly.

The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company in a notice said, “Dear esteemed customers, please be informed of the downward tariff review of our Band A feeders from N225/kWh to N206.80/kWh effective 6th May 2024 with guaranteed availability of 20-24hrs supply daily. The tariff for Bands B, C, D, and E remains unchanged”.

Also, the Ibadan DisCo informed its customers about the tariff slash, saying, “Customers using prepaid meters will be the first to experience the revised tariff – N206.80/kWh whenever they vend this month of May. While for post-paid customers, the revised tariff will reflect in the electricity bills to be received at the end of May 2024”.

Similarly, the Port Harcourt DisCo as well as its Eko, Abuja, Kano and Kaduna counterparts said they had all implemented the tariff slash to reflect the new order.

The NERC expressed its dedication to maintaining a regulatory environment that balances the interests of the consumers with the sustainability of the electricity supply industry.

It said the tariff reduction was part of its ongoing efforts to ensure that electricity remained affordable for Nigerians while also encouraging efficiency and improvement in service delivery by the distribution companies.

The Co-Convener, Situation Room, James Ugochukwu, suggested that merely reducing electricity tariffs would not address the root issue, advocating instead for the government to tackle energy problems comprehensively, ensuring adequate fuel and diesel supply, and empowering states to develop their independent power sources.

Ugochukwu said, “A caring government should be more concerned about the plights of its people given the pronouncement they made on May 29, 2023, when they took over people.

“Nigerians are battling with high fuel prices and now a hike in electricity tariffs. We are groaning under the increasing cost of living.

The Band A consumers which are the manufacturers are finding it difficult to break through in their businesses which is affecting the cost of living in the country.

“Reducing the electricity tariff will not change anything. The Federal Government should fix the issue of energy so that Nigeria can have enough fuel and diesel to power its operations. They should also empower other states to see how they have their own independent power plants.”

Also, the Coordinator of the Atulunse Initiative, Olaseni Shalom, expressed concern about the dire situation in the country and urged the government to prioritize finding solutions to the economic crisis.

Shalom emphasised the importance of focusing on domestic production and attracting investments to stimulate economic growth.

He noted, “What is happening in the power or energy sector is the same issue that is affecting all the critical sectors of the economy which is as a result of hyperinflation. It is a terrible situation that we are in the country.

“What Nigerians need to do now is to put pressure on our government to find solutions to the economic situation we are going through. They need to focus on our productions. We need investments in the country.”

The Executive Director of YouthHub Africa, Rotimi Olawale, noted that the government had been unable to ensure a regular supply of electricity or provision of subsidies in the sector, adding that the inability to pay the increased tariffs should be considered a human right.

“The government has shown that it is unable to provide or run any subsidy programme, electricity subsidy, effectively and efficiently, and also continue to provide optimum services.

“That is something that has become very obvious, and if we want private sector investment in the electricity sector, the pricing must be such that it remains attractive for them to recoup their investment. So, in some ways, I support pricing that allows investment to come into the sector.’’

‘Total reversal impossible’

But the minister of power’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Bolaji Tunji, maintained that the major problem of the industry was liquidity and that could only be addressed with a cost-reflective tariff.

He argued, “If people are now saying there should be a total reversal of the tariff, then we don’t want the industry to survive because money has to be paid to the gas companies. This money can only come from whatever is generated.

“Can the government afford over N2tn to pay subsidies yearly? No! What about the legacy debt and the current debt? These are the concerns being raised. The debts are affecting the industry seriously.’’

Speaking further, he said, “If you now say they should reverse this tariff, no, they cannot reverse it, unless we want to continually be in darkness; because the investors will pack up, and they won’t be able to sustain their businesses.’’

“It will take us back to where we were before. If people say we should go back to the status quo, it means we don’t want the industry to thrive. If we want the sustenance of this sector, people have to pay,” he stressed.

He noted that the pricing of gas in dollars has been a major concern for the ministry, saying, however, that gas in the international market is denominated in dollars.

He said the minister had met with the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperipke Ekpo, seeking how to ensure gas supply gets to the power generating companies seamlessly to avert the problem of gas shortages.

“We are looking at how we can have a sustained gas supply to the GenCos. The meeting with the gas minister is still ongoing to solve the issue of gas,” he submitted.

On his part, the President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gabriel Idahosa, described the development as a gradual maturing of the electricity market which could spark further price reviews in the foreseeable future.

According to him, the decision by the NERC to re-evaluate its earlier stance might not be unconnected with a fundamental shift in the consumption patterns of electricity consumers since the new tariff was announced.

Idahosa said, “It is a gradual maturing of the electricity market. NERC has deregulated the market. So, each market can now determine its price. Eko Disco can determine their prices; Ikeja Electric can determine their prices.

“Each operator will look at their local market and see the level of efficiency and look at the pricing that can bring them more money because they have looked at the N225 price and found that a lot of people are no more comfortable consuming energy like before.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Mr. Niyi Yusuf, said that the adjustment by the NERC was timely and a welcome development.

“The appreciation in forex rates is what NERC gave for the slight reduction. While this adjustment by NERC is timely and welcome, it is important to note that the industry needs an appropriate tariff that will sustain investments and operations in both the short and long term. This is the hard work that needs to still be done,” Yusuf submitted.

He reiterated the need to get appropriate tariffs that would sustain investments and operations in both the short and long term.

“I would rather we focus on getting appropriate tariffs that will sustain investments and operations in both the short and long term. At the N206 per kilowatt, and if available, it should help to reduce the average power cost for most enterprises based on a power mix of different sources, including generator, solar, gas, public grid among others,” he pointed out.
